Reflections of Pittsburgh
From the time I was a little kid, until the day I moved to Pittsburgh, there was always a fascination with the city. I definitely grew up a sports fan for the teams in Pittsburgh. I rememeber being about five or six years old and seeing the steelers for the first time on television. My father would tell me back then that I would grow up to love the steelers. And he was right. I haven’t missed a game live or on tv in probably ten years. I also am an avid Penguins and pirates fan but that came many years later.
I always had the same vision of Pittsburgh growing up and before I moved down here. I visited the city many times, whether it was for games or just visiting friends and family. I imagined big buildings, lots of people, great sports, and a good nightlife. When I traveled to Pittsburgh, before I actually moved here, I never really got a taste of what the inner city was all about. My family lived kinda on the outskirts so I just went by what I had heard or read, or seen in movies. I don’t really remember the names of the some of the movies I had seen that drew a picture of what the city was about, but I definitely know there were a couple. More recent, there have been a few movies as well as television shows to hit the big screen. Russell Crowe and Jake Gyllenhal recently shot movies in the Pittsburgh. A comedy called Zack and Miri was shot in Monroeville. I have actually been to the restaurant where that movie was shot. It was a coffee shop back then, it has since been transformed into a chinese restaurant.
While in Highschool, I always had the desire to attend the University of Pittsburgh. I knew it was a good school and I just wanted to be there. The city is just as passionate about the college teams as they are about the pro teams. I really think that is what brings this city so close together. There are also so many other cool things to see in Pittsburgh. There are many museums and landmarks of meaning to check out. The only real problem I have had adjusting to here is the traffic. I live in Squirrel Hill so I’m dealing with it everyday. I know it’s gonna be there, but for some reason I can’t get used to it. It’s always been a big mystery to me why the traffic seems to back up near every tunnel in Pittsburgh. I’m starting to believe people have a fear of driving through them, or that there is a huge cliff at the other end they don’t wanna go over. Maybe it’s one of those things that we will never figure out.
